Q&A - Personal

What inspires you to compete?

My inspiration to compete comes from the loss of my 9-year old brother to children's leukemia in 2004. When he passed I ran the Detroit Free Press Marathon in his memory at the age of 15 and have loved the active lifestyle since. After seeing the strength and fight he had towards his health makes me feel like I should be able to do anything

Employment / Experience Summary

I truly enjoy my job at the local running shop Runnin' Gear, where I have been for 3 years. This job gives me the ability to work with athletes every day and teach the new comers to the sport about the lifestyle, how great it is, and point them in the direction of an active life.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

This fall I will be attending Hope College as a freshman. While there I'll be an active member of the triathlon club and look forward to working with the athletes there and training with them. I will be studying the sciences with the intent of attending medical school afterward for graduate work, maybe something in sports medicine.

Why do you compete?

I compete because it is an absolute blast to race, and even train, and also to meet new people, share stories, and inspire new comers to reach to limits they never thought they could reach.

Some Personal Information About Me:

After losing my brother, I wanted to somehow give back to the kids that were still fighting cancer. So I organized a 5K/10K Run and 5K Walk called the Spring Snowman. I started the race in 2006 and it has been a great success. The first year we raised $9,000, this year we raised $12,000. The money was taken over to Mott Children's Hospital where we bought video game sysytems, TVs, DVDs, cots, white boards, gas/phone cards and much more for the patients. It is a very rewarding charity event, to learn more go to the erichartwellfoundation.com

Q&A - Competition

What are you planning for next season?

Maybe an early year ultra marathon 50K or 50 mile, possibly january-march. My main focus of the year will be on training to get a great time in a half ironman event late in the season. Throughout the beginning of spring and summer I'll race sprint and olympic races to place well and build speed. In the late fall I may try a marathon or half marathon pr.

What has been your biggest accomplishment?

When I was only 15 years old and I finished the Detroit Free Presss Marathon

I'll be at Steelhead as well. I'm just doing the bike portion of the relay as I was expecting to still be recovering from Western States right now.

I'll be done in time to watch you cross the finish line!!

Good Luck!
